You may wonder why we refer to radio as magical. Well, in our view that is exactly what it is! It allows you to paint pictures in whatever colours or designs, it allows the imagination to run wild. Radio is unlike any other media. Newspapers sit there in black and white, television with its moving images sometimes can just wash over you... but radio...! It filters through those speakers at home, in your car, at work, wherever you may be, and allows you to make your own mind up about what things look like, smell like, feel like..... we all have great imaginations and radio allows the listener to use theirs to the very extreme.
Being part of radio sales and part of this magical world really is incredibly gratifying. Imagine being able to help your client to develop their company and their brand - you can be part of making that success happen.
Radio Sales people must have an outgoing personality and know how to ask for the order. Of course there’s an element of routine administrative work involved, but you’ll spend most of your time in front of the decision makers selling the virtues of radio advertising and your radio station. This is the easy part; the fun part. This is when you’ll ask the questions and you’ll get the answers to enable you to create a solution to the client’s advertising and marketing needs.
In today’s fast moving world radio is in a position to offer a client everything they could want from an ad campaign no matter how big or small and the opportunities are so diverse…
- It could be a 30 second advertising campaign highlighting the company brand.
- You could be creating a giant promotion with in-store appearances by the presenters.
- Maybe you have an idea that is just right for them like sponsoring the travel and traffic or the main sponsor of this years big music event in the local park.
All of our stations have professionally produced web sites promoted on-air by the presenters and you are in a position to offer a full marketing solution. For example:
- You could promote a special offer on the radio and the listener can go to our web site and down load a voucher.
- You could offer the sponsorship of the weather on the radio which then directs listeners to the website to see a full 5 day weather update with the sponsors logo and advertising message; you could even click through to his own micro-site
…and all this arranged by you!
For many, radio sales has been the beginning of a bright future in radio. Many successful radio station managers started life as a trainee sales person and are now responsible for the whole radio station, it can and should be your first stepping stone into a whole new world!

Programming
You don't have to be a DJ to work in Radio!
There are so many facets to programming within radio, which is very encouraging for anybody wanting to join the industry as this means the route of entry can be quite vast. More >
You generally find that within the industry people tend to be quite promiscuous and flirt with other areas. For instance: Audio Producers find they have a talent for producing ‘On Air’ content and subsequently move into programme production (usually they will become the producer of a breakfast show). They then find out that they are actually pretty good on the air and move completely into presentation. This can happen the other way around too, and does quite frequently, with presenters wanting to expand their talents and move into production.
So have we whetted your appetite? Do you think you’d like a career in:
- Presentation
- Journalism
- Audio Production
- Programme Production
- Web Content Production
- Programme Management
- Promotions
Your next questions have got to be ‘How do I get in?’, ‘How do I open the door?’, ‘How do I make that first step?'....
We are always searching for emerging talent. It is what keeps the industry fluid and alive. Make contact with us. Tell us about yourself and what you can add to the station’s output. Also bear in my that The Local Radio Company owns and operates 26 other stations aside from this one and many of them are adjacent to each other and our managers talk everyday. So, even if there isn’t an opportunity here there maybe one next door.
Do you have an mp3 or a CD of your work you can let us hear? The quality doesn’t matter. It could have been you on the air at your student radio station; your local high street store; your hospital radio station or it maybe that you are just messing around at home with a mic and a pc. Perhaps you build and generate web-content or produce music and audio. Our programmers will see through the quality of the recording and hear the quality and the potential of the talent.
Have you ever listened to the radio and thought ‘I could do that!’ Well, maybe you could! You should think about making contact with your local radio station because it’s a great place to work.
