HFS CHARITY

HFS is a local independent charity that has been established for 21 years and has helped thousands of people set up home. It re-uses furniture and electrical goods to help low income households in Hastings and Rother.

 

They provide FREE collection and can also provide a full house clearance service.

 

Their stores are in Dorset Place, Hastings and London Road, Bexhill. They’re open 6 days a week to the public and if you get a means-tested benefit or working tax credit , bring proof to the store and get 30% off plus free delivery. Also, pensioners and full time students get 10% off and free delivery.

 

The charity also involves unemployed people as volunteers and trainees helping them to gain experience, skills and qualifications. HFS is also running free courses for unemployed people in partnership with Sussex Coast College which is teaching how to revitalise old furniture using creative paint effects.

EMMAUS CHARITY SHOP 

 

Emmaus Hastings and Rother is a new second hand charity shop selling second hand furniture, clothing, books and DVD’s.

 

Donations are always gratefully received and they offer a free collection service.

 

The shop is at 2 Whitworth Road, Hastings (behind Sainsbury’s), and it’s open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

 

They’re also looking for more volunteers to work in the charity shop.

  

 

 

 

HASTINGS AND ROTHER ASSOCIATION FOR THE BLIND

 

Hastings and Rother Voluntary Association for the Blind is a small local charity and they rely heavily on volunteers.

 

Without the volunteers there would be no Day Centre or Clubs. They're currently very short of volunteer mini bus drivers and helpers.

BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION CHARITY SHOPS 

 

The British Heart Foundation Charity Shops in 1066 Country urgently need donations to help fill their shelves.

 

The recession has meant more people are holding onto items rather than giving them away which has had an impact on their stock.

 

If you’re having a clear-out to make way for new gifts then please consider donating any unwanted items. They are after good quality clothing, handbags, CD’s, DVD’s, books or bric-a-brac.

RUN FOR PROSTATE CANCER 

 

The Hastings Half Marathon is taking place on Sunday 21st March and The Prostate Cancer Charity is looking for people to run for them and raise money through sponsorship.

OLIVER CURD TRUST 

 

The Oliver Curd Trust is a registered charity which which offers a break in their holiday home at Crowhurst Park for families of children with life threatening and life limiting illnesses.

 

They are currently fundraising to buy a second home in the area.

 

Last year they had 50 runners taking part in the Hastings Half Marathon which helped raise £20,000. They’re attempting to double the number of runners this year and they’ll also be unveiling their dolphin mascot on the day who’ll be completing the course.

 

They’re looking for runners to run on their behalf and also they need a name for the mascot. A facebook page has been set up asking for suggestions.

SHORT STORIES FOR ST.MICHAEL'S HOSPICE 

 

A book of poetry and short stories have been written by members of a local writing group to raise funds for St.Michael’s Hospice.

 

Eight members of the Battle Writers Group have produced the book called “Pieces From Eight” which has taken them two years to put together.

SARA LEE TRUST WANT RUNNERS 

 

A charity which helps seriously ill people in Hastings and Rother is appealing for anyone who is running the Hastings Half Marathon to run it on their behalf and help raise much needed funds.

 

The Sara Lee Trust, which is based in Upper Maze Hill, St.Leonards will provide a running vest or T-Shirt for anyone who takes part in the race on Sunday 21st March.

 

In addition, any runner raising more than £200 will receive a 30 minute back and shoulder massage free of charge at one of the trust’s treatment rooms.

RUNNERS NEEDED

 

The Hastings branch of the Alzheimer’s Society is appealing for local athletes to help it’s fundraising by running the Hastings Half Marathon.

 

The recession has made generating funds for the charity really difficult over the past 12 months so they’re hoping that people will come forward and run on their behalf.

CHARITY CYCLE RELAY 

 

The 1066 Country Fundraisers are organizing a series of sporting challenges throughout the year with the proceeds divided among a host of local charities.

 

The first event this year is taking place on Saturday 27th March. It’s a 10 hour cycle relay at William Parker Sports College. From 10am until 8pm teams of five people will be riding around the college’s athletics track.

 

The charities to benefit include St.Michael’s Hospice, Sara Lee Trust, Bluebell Cattery and Demelza House.

BLUEBELL RIDGE RSPCA HOME 

 

The Bluebell Ridge RSPCA home in Chown’s Hill, Hastings is fighting for survival and currently only has enough money to keep going until April.

 

They’ve received some great support from various different fundraising events in recent weeks but are appealing for more financial help.

NAMIBIAN ULTRA FOR CHILDREN'S TRUST 

 

Neil Sadler from Rye is undertaking an endurance run in Namibia between 24th May and 1st June.

 

It’s known as the Namibian Ultra and is one of the toughest endurance events in the world. It consists of running 77 miles in 24 hours in the extremes of desert heat and freezing nights, carrying 12kg the whole way.

 

Neil is looking for corporate sponsors for himself and general sponsorship from the public to raise money for his chosen charity, The Children’s Trust.

APPEAL FOR WHEELCHAIR 

 

Have you got a child’s wheelchair.

 

It’s urgently needed by a family who have a five year old son who’s been diagnosed with Perthes Disease. It’s a childhood disorder which affects the head of the femur (the ball of the bone socket joint of the hip)

 

Without a wheelchair this boy is virtually housebound, so if you’ve got a wheelchair which is taking up room in a garage or shed then why not put it to good use and help this little boy get out and about.

SPONSORED SWIM 

 

In April swimmers at Summerfields Leisure Centre will be joining up with other swimming pools around the country to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

 

Last year’s event raised £1.5 million and organizers hope this year’s sponsored swim will make even more money.

 

It’s taking place between 16 – 18 April and there’s various different challenges you can do. Yon can complete sponsored swims as an individual or as part of a team.

HASTINGS LIFEBOAT AGM 

 

Hastings Lifeboat Station is open daily at The Stade and is the most visited in the South East.

 

The Lifeboat Society is holding it’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday 25th March at the Lifeboat Station.

FREE IT TRAINING COURSES

 

 

Free IT training courses for single parents are being held in Bexhill and Hastings.

 

The courses will consist of ten workshops, each three hours long and will be held at easily accessible community venues.

 

Topics include introduction to computers, word processing spreadsheets, internet searching and security, and internet job searches.

EAST SUSSEX HEARING RESOURCE CENTRE 

 

The East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre and Adult Social Care are working in partnership to provide a mobile information and advice service for deaf, hard of hearing and deaf/blind people living in East Sussex.

 

On Friday 26th March the mobile bus will be visiting the George Inn Car Park in the High Street, Robertsbridge between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

 

The bus is accessible to wheelchair users and representatives from the East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre will be available to provide information and advice on all aspects of hearing loss.
